LOWELL -- The police department is warning residents of a new phone scam in which a caller claims to be a Lowell police officer requesting donations for a "Youth Narcotics Organization."

The caller asks the person at the other end to leave donations in their mailbox and says a non-uniformed officer in an unmarked vehicle will pick up the money.

Police are asking residents to report such scams to police, including making note of the number making the call if possible. Tips can be left at the police department's non-emergency line at 978-937-3200 or on the anonymous tip line, 978-459-TIPS (8477).
