LOWELL -- The city's building commissioner has tendered his resignation.
City Manager Kevin Murphy informed city councilors Wednesday evening in an email that Building Commissioner Robert Marsilia has resigned to take a similar position in Porstmouth, N.H., close to his home.
"I will keep you informed of our alternate plans," wrote Murphy, who was sworn in as city manager on Monday.
Marsilia could not be reached for comment late Wednesday evening.
In 2010, then-City Manager Bernie Lynch hired Marsilia as building commissioner.
He had previously worked for the city as the project manager for the $21 million Ameresco energy-performance contracting project. Marsilia had more than 30 years experience in the construction industry.
Marsilia oversaw the Building Department in the aftermath of Lynch's re-organization of Inspectional Services, which was renamed Development Services.
In the fiscal year ending July 1, Marsilia was budgeted to make $84,158.
In addition to filling Marsilia's position, Murphy will also get to name a new chief financial officer, head of planning and development, and new economic development director.
Former Cambridge City Manager Robert Healy is serving as a budget consultant while Murphy seeks a permanent CFO.
