LOWELL -- A pickup truck driver smashed a cemetery's fence and knocked over a headstone before his license plate fell off Friday night, according to police-radio broadcasts.

Police responded to Edson Cemetery, at the corner of Boston Road and Swan Street in South Lowell, around 9 p.m. after they received a report of a pickup truck driver trying to ram his way out of the cemetery.

A portion of the cemetery's chainlink fence and one headstone was knocked down. Police said they had located the driver's license plate at the scene and were checking the driver's address.

At 10 p.m., police said they were still investigating the incident.
