CHELMSFORD -- The police department confirmed the Boston Road area near a sinkhole which opened up late last month had some issues this week but all was under control by Wednesday morning.

Deputy Police Chief Jim Spinney said with heavy rains, sand and dirt laid down there had been pushed around. Spinney said Wednesday crews were out on scene in the early morning to deal with the situation and traffic was rerouted.

A 15-foot-wide opening at Boston Road near Brian Road formed overnight into Sunday, March 30, in torrential downpours. Emergency crews were at the scene last month to detour traffic and prevent a utility pole from toppling situated right next to the sinkhole. The fire department said it believed water had gushed around the culvert running under Boston Road and carved out an opening under the street.

A detour will be put in place from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Thursday as crews work to repave that area during that time, Spinney added. The same detours from last month will be in place -- those traveling from Billerica along Route 4 toward Chelmsford will be directed down Parker Road. Those coming from Chelmsford Center will have to take a detour on Warren Avenue.
