TEWKSBURY -- A Tewksbury police sergeant has been placed on paid leave following a drunken driving arrest last week in Lowell.
Sgt. Timothy Kelly, 48, was charged by Lowell police with operating under the influence of alcohol.
"Immediately on Friday he was put on administrative leave," Police Chief Tim Sheehan said. "We're in the process right now of an investigation that involves town counsel."
A Tewksbury resident, Kelly has been with the department since 1995.
According to the police department's website, Kelly is one of nine members who participate in the department's motorcycle unit.
He has also worked as the department's K9 officer.
Kelly was due to be arraigned last Friday in Lowell District Court. The results of his arraignment or details of any future court appearances were not immediately available.
