LOWELL -- UMass Lowell Chancellor Marty Meehan will be the commencement speaker this year for Lowell High School.

"It will be a tremendous honor to address the graduates from Lowell High School's Class of 2014," Meehan, a Lowell High graduate, said in a statement Tuesday. "I remember well what it was like to be in their place, with so many dreams for the future.

"I hope I can inspire them to follow those dreams, as I know firsthand that a Lowell High School education provides a firm foundation for the next stop in life," he said.

Meehan, who graduated in 1974, has been inducted as one of the high school's distinguished alumni.

"Chancellor Meehan is a role model for our students and I am delighted he will spend an evening with our Class of 2014 graduates and family," Headmaster Brian Martin said in a statement.

Commencement is scheduled for June 4.
