LOWELL -- A Honda Pilot SUV crashed into a railing above a city canal at 153 Broadway St. on Friday night, leaving a gaping, 20-footlong hole in the metal fencing.
The unidentified driver, who was apparently unhurt in the crash, was taken into protective custody by Lowell police following the single-car crash that crumpled the vehicle's front end and dislodged two dozen vertical metal posts that tumbled into the canal below.
The cause of the crash, which occurred in dry conditions, was undetermined and remained under investigation, according to a Lowell police officer at the scene.
Moments after the black Pilot, bearing Mass. license plates "TFAB,' was towed away by Jon Kazanjian Towing Co., a Lowell officer secured the scene by placing several stands of yellow crime-scene tape across the fence opening, and pulling his cruiser onto the bridge sidewalk.
