WESTFORD -- Crisafulli Elementary school officials reported they had to hold an indoor recess Wednesday after a bear was spotted nearby on Robinson Road.

Nina Mangan, administrative assistant in the Westford public schools superintendent's office, said her office was contacted after a citizen walking down Robinson Road spotted a bear and called the schools to notify them of its location. Mangan said Westford Academy and Col. John Robinson Elementary School were also contacted. She said she believed Robinson would also switch over to indoor recess, as a precautionary measure.

Crisafulli office assistants declined to release when indoor recess typically take places at the schools. It is unknown if children were called in from outside once the bear was spotted. Crisafulli Principal Sharon Kennelly could not be reached immediately for comment but sent out an email around 11 a.m. notifying the public the bear sighting a few minutes before would affect recess.
