LOWELL -- Sophomore forward Adam Chapie scored with just 1:17 left in regulation play to lift the UMass Lowell hockey team over Vermont, 3-2, in the opening game of their best-of-3 Hockey East quarterfinal series at the Tsongas Center.
Scott Wilson scored a first-period goal for the River Hawks, who fell behind 2-1 entering the third period. Freshman Evan Campbell scored at 11:17 of the third to tie the game, then Chapie ended it prior to an almost certain overtime.
Connor Hellebuyck made 27 saves in net for UML. The teams play again Saturday night and, if necessary, Sunday afternoon. All games are at the Tsongas Center.
