BELCHERTOWN, Mass. -- A Lowell man, a Groton man and a Burlington resident was among more than 70 people charged over the weekend in connection with a series of pre-St. Patrick's Day parties at the University of Massachusetts in Amherst.
The Republican of Springfield released a list of those who were arrested Monday. Those charged were arraigned in Eastern Hampshire District Court in Belchertown on charges ranging from failing to disperse, assault and battery on a police officer, resisting arrest and being a minor in possession of alcohol.
Locals included on the list:
* Jared Dawson, 21, Groton, disorderly conduct, resisting arrest, assault and battery on a police officer, inciting a riot;
* Jesse T. Duchesne, 19, Lowell, possession of alcohol under the age of 21, open container of alcohol;
* Max Smith Jr., 20, Burlington, possession of alcohol under the age of 21.
Police say more than 70 students face charges in connection with the "Blarney Blowout" parties Saturday and Sunday. About 50 students were taken into custody while 20 or so received a court summons.
Police in riot gear used tear gas to break up gatherings of drunken and rowdy students, some of whom hurled bottles and snowballs at police.
