TEWKSBURY -- A Billerica woman and Chelmsford man were arrested Sunday, shortly after police say they tried to steal another woman's pocketbook in the Staples parking lot.

Erica Marsh, 25, of 14 Nickerson Drive in Billerica and John Torres, 27, of 82 Brick Kiln Rd., Apt. 7305, in Billerica, face charges of armed assault (knife) with the intent to rob, and conspiracy.

Tewksbury police responded at 5:20 p.m. to Stadium Plaza at 10 Main St., in front of the Staples store, where a woman told them she was attacked by another woman who tried to steal her pocketbook.

According to police, the woman said she struggled with the suspect and yelled for help, holding onto her purse as bystanders rushed to help.

The suspect ran away and got into a car. License plate information from witnesses helped police track the car to Billerica, where Marsh and Torres, the alleged driver, were arrested.

Marsh and Torres were scheduled to be arraigned Monday in Lowell District Court.
