LITTLETON -- Selectman Jenna Brownson has abruptly resigned from the board on Saturday, citing illness in her family.

"Family obligations, stemming from illness, require my attention and time. I believe that I would be unable to give the Town of Littleton my committed dedication in light of the present situation my family faces," Brownson wrote in her resignation letter, which she posted on her Facebook page.

Brownson was the top vote-getter in the annual town election last May, beating then-Selectman Chairman Greg Champney by more than 240 votes.

To fill the vacancy, the board will need to call a special town election. Due to process specified under state special election law, however, the special election could not be held in conjunction with the May 10 annual town election. Selectmen plan to discuss the matter at their future meetings, according to information posted on the town website.
