LITTLETON -- All lanes of Interstate 495 in Littleton were briefly closed Sunday afternoon after a Ford Explorer rolled over, sending at least one person to a Boston trauma center via a medical helicopter that landed on the highway.
Police and fire department radio broadcasts indicated one person involved in the crash may have been ejected, and two others were injured.
The severity of the injuries and the identity of those involved was not immediately available.
The crash occurred about 3:45 p.m., forcing police to quickly close all northbound lanes since the wrecked vehicle and debris was scattered across the highway.
Another crash soon occurred in the southbound lanes nearby, backing up traffic heading south as well, according to police radio broadcasts.
All lanes, northbound and southbound, were briefly closed while the medical helicopter landed on the northbound side of the highway to pick up one of the people injured in the crash.
Police remain at the scene, but the breakdown lane and far right travel lane were opened to allow vehicles to pass about 4:30 p.m.
Traffic remains backed up in both directions on the highway, and state police used Twitter to encourage anyone who is traveling today to avoid that portion of the highway.
