LOWELL -- City police are investigating whether there is a connection between a Saturday night armed robbery on University Avenue and an attempted robbery that ended when a female clerk at a Mammoth Road gas station foiled a robbery attempt by attacking the suspect on Sunday.
The first incident occurred Saturday about 7 p.m., when a man described as a white or Hispanic male with brown eyes pulled what appeared to be a gun and robbed Jerry's Food Store, at 207 University Ave.
That suspect was described as being about 5'8 and 200 pounds, and he wore dark-colored sweats.
On Sunday, just before 6 p.m., a man wearing a gray sweatshirt walked into the Prime gas station at 51 Mammoth Road and threatened "to poke" a female clerk if she didn't hand over cash.
Police said the female clerk fought off the suspect. Police-radio broadcasts indicated officers found an object near the gas station that had what may be the suspect's blood on it.
A more detailed description of the suspect in the failed robbery on Mammoth Road was not immediately available, but police said they were investigating whether it may be the same suspect that was involved in Saturday's heist.
Police have surveillance photos of the suspect that robbed Jerry's Food Store, but those photographs have not been released to the public.
