LOWELL -- A 28-year-old city resident fought one man on Central Street on Sunday morning, police said, then assaulted a passerby while chasing the first victim.

Timothy Zannoni, of 70 Stromquist Ave., was released on personal recognizance in Lowell District Court on Tuesday after pleading not guilty to charges of assault and battery and disorderly conduct. He was ordered to stay away and have no contact with the victims.

According to court documents, police said an officer saw Zannoni fighting with another man, whom he threw to the ground. Punches were exchanged and several people tried to intervene, police said. As the other man fled, Zannoni pursued him with a beer bottle in his hand, police said.

Zannoni bumped into a passerby, punched him in the face; the pair struggled in the street as cars swerved to avoid them, police said.

Police allege the second assault was unprovoked and initiated by Zannoni.

Zannoni's next date is a pretrial conference on Feb. 21.
