LOWELL -- A 28-year-old city man is accused of threatening his girlfriend with a knife and then beating her in the head with a bottle.
In Lowell District Court on Tuesday, Jose Ortiz, of 10 Read St, Apt. 2, pleaded not guilty to charges of intimidation, assault and battery with a dangerous weapon and assault with a dangerous weapon.
Ortiz was released on personal recognizance, with conditions that there be no abuse of the alleged victim and abide by any restraining order.
Lowell police allege in court documents that at 4:50 p.m. last Friday, police responded to 10 Read St. for a report of a woman whose boyfriend tried to stab her.
The 26-year-old victim said that during an ongoing argument, Ortiz "exploded in rage," grabbed a knife off the kitchen counter and threatened to stab her, police wrote.
The woman tried to use her cell phone to call police, but Ortiz grabbed the phone, police wrote. A witness told police he heard a woman scream for help and saw Ortiz pinning the woman to the grounding striking her several times. The witness allegedly pulled Ortiz off the victim, then Ortiz fled.
Ortiz told police he struck the woman because she hit him first. He denied threatening her with a knife or hitting her with a bottle.
A pretrial conference is scheduled for March 4.
