BILLERICA -- A plastic bag containing what appeared to be a pressure cooker was left next to the entrance of Market Basket at the Billerica Mall and sparked a bomb scare Wednesday evening.
Billerica Police were called to the store about 5 p.m., after someone reported the package. In the wake of the Boston Marathon bombings, pressure cookers have caused increasing alarm.
"Obviously, we have to take these matters quite seriously," said Sgt. Steven Elmore.
Billerica Police and firefighters evacuated Market Basket and cordoned off the parking lot until a state police bomb squad arrived to X-ray the package.
An X-ray and close up examination by a bomb squad technician wearing a protective suit revealed there was nothing more than a slow cooker in the bag.
Due to the location where the package was left, police are still investigating whether someone meant for the package to cause a scare, according to Elmore.
Police plan to review the store's surveillance video in an attempt to identify whoever left the package there.
Anyone with information is asked to call Billerica Police at 978-671-0900.
