LOWELL -- The Richard P. Howe Bridge is scheduled to close on Thursday from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. to allow crews to remove portions of the old Textile Memorial Bridge.
Traffic will be diverted to the O'Donnell Bridge on School Street or the Aiken Street bridge during the closure. Pedestrian traffic will also be diverted to one of those river crossings during critical times of the operation.
Police details will be deployed to various locations to assist in traffic control.
The work is subject to cancellation without notice due to inclement weather or high winds.
MassDOT encourages drivers to reduce speed and use caution while traveling through the area of the new bridge.
The bridge also closed on Tuesday morning to allow crews to remove portions of the old Textile Memorial Bridge .
The Richard P. Howe Bridge, which opened in November, is named after the former Lowell city councilor and mayor, who spent 40 years in office. The $32.5 million project includes demolition of the old bridge, which is expected to continue through the spring.
