METHUEN -- Five Lowell residents were hospitalized Sunday, including a 5-year-old girl in critical condition, after a head-on accident Sunday afternoon.
A Mitsubishi and a BMW crashed into one another just after noon on Lowell Street (Route 110) near Griffin Brook Drive, near the rear of the Hickory Hills Golf Course. Methuen police and the Essex district attorney's office said the incident remained under investigation Monday, with no other details about the crash available.
No charges have been filed, said Steve O'Connell, a spokesman for District Attorney Jonathan Blodgett.
Driving the Mitsubishi was 37-year-old Jessica Delgado of 35 West L St., Lowell. Magaly Marquez of the same address was a passenger. The 5-year-old girl and a 9-year-old boy, who also live at the same address, were also passengers.
It wasn't clear if all the occupants were relatives, O'Connell said. The girl was taken by medical helicopter to Massachusetts General Hospital, and the others were also taken to Mass General after initially being taken to Lawrence General Hospital, he said.
Mass General said Monday that Delgado and Marquez were both in the surgical intensive care unit. The conditions of the two children were not available.
The other vehicle involved was driven by 37-year-old Sarah Libby of 67 West Meadow Road, Lowell.
Libby was taken to Holy Family Hospital in Methuen. The hospital said Monday afternoon she was no longer at the hospital.
