DEVENS -- Firefighters contained a blaze that started inside a heating unit on the roof of the brand new New England Studios in Devens early Monday, but it took a lot of manpower to do it thanks to a snow-covered roof.

Devens Fire Chief Joe Leblanc said crews were called to the New England Studios at 98 Studio Way about 7 a.m., where they found a fire in one of several heating units on the building's roof.

Damage was contained to the heating unit and did not spread to the building, Leblanc said.

Leblanc said a third alarm was struck for manpower even though the fire was small because of the fire's location atop the snow-covered roof.

"It was way up there on the top of the roof," he said. "It was quickly extinguished with no damage to the building."

New England Studios is a 15-acre complex that cost about $15 million to build, and it is expected to draw movie production companies to the Bay State with four 18,000-square-foot sound stages, office spaces for film crews and actors, and other amenities.

No one was hurt.
