WOBURN -- A Middlesex County grand jury on Monday indicted a Malden man who authorities believe stole more than $10,600 from five banks in three weeks, including robberies in Billerica, Dracut, Tewksbury and Wilmington.
John Freni, 21, faces five counts of unarmed robbery and five counts of intimidation to steal from a bank, District Attorney Marian Ryan said Monday.
"With these charges, we allege that this defendant, over the course of three weeks, robbed banks across Middlesex County, putting bank employees in fear for their safety," Ryan said in a statement. "I commend the efforts of the Billerica, Dracut, Everett, Tewksbury, and Wilmington police officers, who working together, followed the evidence and identified this defendant."
Freni was arrested in Everett on Oct. 7, shortly an Eastern Bank branch there was robbed.
Investigation by several local agencies led to his charges in connection with the Sept. 14 robbery of TD Bank at 499 Boston Rd. in Billerica, the Sept. 19 robbery of TD Bank at 1255 Bridge St. in Dracut, the Sept. 23 robbery of Eastern Bank in Wilmington and the Oct. 1 robbery of Eastern Bank at 1800 Main St. in Tewksbury.
Freni allegedly walked away with $3,800 in Wilmington, more than $3,200 in Tewksbury, around $1,800 in Dracut, more than $1,200 in Everett and almost $600 in Billerica.
At each location, he allegedly showed the teller a note demanding money. He wore similar clothing and accessories at each bank, according to Ryan's office.
Freni's arraignment is scheduled for Dec. 17 in Lowell Superior Court.
