LOWELL -- City Councilor John Leahy is in the hospital after suffering a mild heart attack.
Leahy's brother-in-law, former City Councilor George Ramirez, confirmed Leahy's health status on Saturday. Leahy, 51, has been in treatment at Lowell General Hospital since Friday afternoon, Ramirez said.
Leahy's cousin, state Rep. David Nangle, D-Lowell, said Leahy had symptoms similar to a heartburn and went to see his doctor to have it checked out. His doctor suggested he visit the hospital for a further examination, and it turned out to be "some sort of blockage," Nangle said.
"He is resting comfortably," Nangle said of Leahy.
Leahy, a self-employed painting contractor, won his first full term on the City Council in the Nov. 5 election.
"John is a hard worker," Nangle said.
