LAWRENCE, Mass. (AP) -- A recount of votes cast in the Lawrence mayoral race shows City Councilor Daniel Rivera has defeated incumbent William Lantigua by a wider margin than indicated in preliminary results.

Official results announce Saturday shows Lantigua lost to Rivera by 81votes, not 58 as indicated in the unofficial results of the Nov. 5 elections.

Rivera immediately pledged to work for all in Lawrence and asked those who support Lantigua to work with him.

Volunteers recounted thousands of votes by hand at the South Lawrence East School. Attorneys for both sides and observers sent by Secretary of State William Galvin monitored the exercise.

Lantigua and Rivera did not respond to Associated Press telephone and email messages seeking comment Saturday.
