LOWELL -- Lowell police watched a 2012 BMW drive up next to Rafael Rodriguez's Toyota Camry in the area of Walker Street Tuesday night.
Based on information from a confidential informant and the "actions'' and "maneuvers" made by Rodriguez, police suspected a drug deal taking place, prosecutor Richard Ewenstein said.
When police approached Rodriguez, he kept his left side hidden. He allegedly had 28 bags of cocaine, more than $500 and cellphones, Ewenstein said.
In Lowell District Court on Wednesday, Rodriguez, 39, 605 Pawtucket Blvd., pleaded not guilty to possession with intent to distribute a Class B drug (cocaine).
Ewenstein asked for $5,000 cash bail, noting Rodriguez had a drug trafficking case in Superior Court that was dropped by prosecutors in August after a motion to suppress was allowed.
Judge Thomas Brennan set Rodriguez's bail at $1,000 cash. A pretrial conference is scheduled for Oct. 1.
