BURLINGTON -- Burlington police are warning residents to use caution when dealing with door-to-door solicitors after an investigation into recent complaints revealed several of them have lengthy criminal records, police said.

Police issued the warning Tuesday evening, but said there is little they can do to force the solicitors out of town since Burlington has no ordinance governing solicitation.

"Residents are advised to be very wary of giving any personal information out to these salespeople and to be very careful about letting them into your home," police said in a statement posted on Facebook.

Lt. Glen Mills said residents should also be aware of suspicious activity in their neighborhoods, and call police if they see solicitors or suspicious persons going behind their neighbor's homes.

Police said anyone concerned about an aggressive salesperson at their door who refuses to leave should call police.

Mills said police began getting complaints about the solicitors last week, and that they have also been seen in Wilmington and Bedford recently.

Many towns have ordinances requiring anyone soliciting door to door get a permit from the town, but Burlington has no such ordinance.

"We don't really have a good tool to hammer them with," Mills said.
