Chelmsford and Dracut each went 3-0 on Saturday as the local high school wrestling season busily swung into action with several quad-meets and tri-meets.
Chelmsford swept its opening three matches of the season, defeating Westford (53-19), Tyngsboro (41-25) and Melrose (58-12).
Going 3-0 on the day for the Lions were 106-pound freshman Griffin Murray (major decision, regular decision, pin), 132-pound junior Jake Ahern (major decision, 2 pins), 145-pound junior James Clasen (major decision, regular decision, pin) and 220-pound junior Brendan Flaherty (3 pins).
Going 2-0 were Kyle McQuaide (technical fall, pin), 160-pound senior Adam Civinskis (2 pins), 182-pound senior Sean Sarault (decision, pin) and 195-pound sophomore Del Driscoll (2 pins). Senior 170-pounder Ben Melisi went 2-1, with his victories being by pin and major decision.
The Grey Ghosts defeated Melrose, 48-21, but lost to Chelmsford (53-19) and Tyngsboro (43-28).
Going 3-0 were 220-pound senior Nate Tashjy (major decision, 2 pins) and 152-pound senior Ben Katz (3 pins). Going 2-1 were 132-pound sophomore Steven O'Brien (2 pins), 120-pound junior Tommy McDonough (major decision, pin) and 138-pound senior Cole Barnshaw (2 pins).
Tyngsboro defeated Melrose (42-29) and Westford (43-28), and lost to Chelmsford (41-25), with the Tigers' triple winners being 138-pound Scott Camacho (3 pins), 160-pound Al Golner (3 pins) and 170-pound Ryan Niven (2 pins, major decision).
Going 2-1 for the Tigers were 182-pound Jake Gallagher (2 pins) and 195-pound Mike Wagner (pin, decision). Winning one match by pin were 220-pound Collin Shanahan and heavyweight Nick Gardella.
Shawsheen opened its season by roaring past Malden (45-3) and Minuteman (59-0), with the Rams' double winners being 138-pound Tim Ward (decision, pin), 145-pound John Costa (2 pins), 152-pound Devonn Pratt (2 pins), 160-pound Chris Sorensen (2 pins) and 170-pound Nick Hoar (2 pins).
The Rams' 220-pounder, Zach Zahiri, had a great match against Malden, pinning his opponent at 5:39.
The Red Devils fell to Somerset (41-38), Bridgewater-Raynham (53-25) and Xaverian (42-35). Going 3-0 in their matches were 132-pound Steve Giampapa (decision, 2 pins), 152-pound Ryan McNeil (2 pins, decision at 160), 170-pound Luke Nigro (decision, 2 pins).
Going 2-1 for the Red Devils were 138-pound Andy Hubbard (2 pins) and 160-pound Dave Swiniarski (2 pins).
Tewksbury forfeited three weight classes and lost to Milford (45-24) and Greater Lawrence (38-36), with the Redmen's double winners being 132-pound Todd Carey (decision, pin), 145-pound Joe Burger (2 pins), 160-pound Dillon Daley (decision, pin) and Nick Jansen (2 pins), who won at both 220 and 285 pounds.
Tewksbury's other winner vs. Milford was 126-pound Mike Donovan (pin). The Redmen's other winners vs. Greater Lawrence were 152-pound Will Ramsdell and 182-pound Broc Dokas, both by pin.
Wilmington opened its season by falling to Lynnfield/North Reading (63-18), Weston (45-30) and Hopkinton (42-39), with the Wildcats' triple winners being 132-pound Tom Gorman (3 pins) and 152-pound Cody Halliday (decision, 2 pins).
Gaven Carta recorded two pins while going 2-1 at 145 pounds. Winning one match each were heavyweight Louis Laffarello, 106-pound Dan Carney, 113-pound Collin Hoffman, 138-pound Jimmy Kendall, 160-pound Nick Troy, 182-pound Andy Lesperance and 195-pound Stan Dancewicz.
Central Catholic's Dave Sergi of Dracut won the 160-pound title at the Salem (N.H.) Invitational, one of three Raider individual champions.
Pat Lacroix won at 126 pounds and was named the tournament's outstanding wrestler. Ben Tavitian was the 220-pound champ.
Other placewinners were heavyweight Dave Veilleux (2nd), 106-pound Tom Pagliarulo (3rd) and 113-pound Jack Kiely (4th). Central finished fifth in this tournament won by Pinkerton Academy.
Dracut opened its season impressively, scoring victories over Concord-Carlisle (50-15), Woburn (48-24) and Greater Lowell (48-33).
Going 3-0 for the Middies were 106-pound Peter Goulet (pin, major decision, forfeit), 138-pound Mike Stewart (3 pins), 152-pound Jim Ryan (3 pins), 170-pound Jaycee Hebert (2 pins, 1 decision) and 220-pound Andrew Richards (3 pins).
Going 2-0 were 120-pound Chris Basnett (major decision, pin) and 126-pound Joe Ryan (2 pins). Going 2-1 were 113-pound Andrew Valdina (2 major decisions) and 145-pound Sam Martin (2 pins).
Winning one match each were 132-pound Mark Butler, 160-pound Brandon Nadolny, 182-pound Stig McElhinney, 182-pound George Gregory and 220-pound Kian Cassella.
Greater Lowell got off to a 2-1 start, defeating Woburn (43-31) and Concord-Carlisle (53-24), and losing to Dracut (48-33).
Going 3-0 for the Gryphons were 182-pound Jeremy Gauthier (major decision, 2 pins), 195-pound Bobby Paquette (forfeit, 2 pins) and 113-pound Miguel Molina (decision, 2 pins).
Winning twice were 132-pound Ryan Coppola, 138-pound Michael Trzcienski (2 decisions), 152-pound Andrew Bergeron (2 pins), 160-pound Tyler Mahoney (2 pins) and 106-pound Justin Kislowski (forfeit, pin).
