BILLERICA -- Employees were forced to evacuate a roughly 30,000-square-foot commercial space on Cook Street after a machine caught on fire Tuesday night.

About 15 employees safely evacuated Lab Manufacturing Inc. shortly after 7 p.m. when the fire was called in to emergency responders, according to Fire Capt. Steven Jenkins.

"We were able to knock the fire down rather quickly," Jenkins said.

He pointed out the piece of machinery that caught fire was approximately 6 feet long and 10 feet wide.

"It created a black smoke condition, which was the primarily problem after the fire was knocked down," Jenkins said.

Employees began reentering the machine shop about 8:45 p.m. after the facility had been thoroughly ventilated.
